The exchange is fully licensed to carry out money-based transactions, as it is registered as an MSB (Money Service Business) with FinCEN. CEX.io’s exchange is also registered with ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) in the UK.

Through its two dedicated services, CEX.io provides a variety of trading options. For example, CEX.io Broker offers margin trading opportunities, ideal for professional traders. CEX.io Brokerage, on the other hand, is very popular among novice traders, due to its option to instantly purchase cryptocurrencies using a debit or credit card.

Also, all the information entered by users will be encrypted before they are sent over the network.

The payment system on CEX.io is compliant with the PCI SSC (Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council).

CEX.io Review

A crypto exchange guide must provide reviews of all of the exchanges out there, so that you can find the right one for you. This review of CEX.io consists of four parts: general info, fees, deposit methods and security.

General Info

CEX.io is a British crypto exchange. A non-exhaustive list of exchanges from the UK (in addition to this one) includes Exmo, CoinEgg, Livecoin, DSX, LocalTrade, Bittylicious, CoinMate, Indacoin, MixCoins, Paybis, Vaultoro, Instant Bitex and eToro.

The exchange lists the following 9 factors as reasons to choose CEX.io as your tading platform.

Out of these, we are a bit hesitant to HIGH LIQUIDITY and COMPETITIVE COMISSIONS. Our thoughts on high liquidity are expressed above and as to the question of whether the trading fees are “competitive” or not, our conclusion is that they are – at best – in line with industry average. See more below under CEX.io Fees.

This exchange is open to US-investors from 24 states in America. We have however not been able to verify which states this exchange is open to. We have contacted the exchange in order to clarify this but we have still not received any response.

Mobile Support

This platform is not only available from your desktop, you can also access it via your mobile browser. Most traders in the crypto world today carry out there trades via desktop (around 70% or so). However, there are of course people out there that want to do it from their smart phone as well. If you’re one of those people, then this platform can still be for you.

Leveraged Trading

CEX.io offers leveraged trading on its trading platform. This means that you can receive a higher exposure towards a certain cryptocurrency’s price increase or decrease, without having the assets necessary. You do this by “leveraging” your trade, which in simple terms essentially means that you borrow from the exchange to bet more.

For instance, let’s say that you have 10,000 USD on your trading account and bet 100 USD on BTC going long (i.e., increasing in value). You do so with 100x leverage. If BTC then increases in value with 10%, if you had only bet 100 USD, you would have earned 10 USD. As you bet 100 USD with 100x leverage, you have instead earned an additional 1,000 USD (990 USD more than if you had not leveraged your deal). On the other hand, if BTC decreases in value with 10%, you have lost 1,000 USD (990 USD more than if you had not leveraged your deal). So, as you might imagine, the balance between risk and reward in leveraged deals is quite fine-tuned (there are no risk free profits).

CEX.io Trading View

Different exchanges have different trading views. And there is no “this overview is the best”-view. You should yourself determine which trading view that suits you the best. What the views normally have in common is that they all show the order book. Or, at least part of the order book. They also show a price chart of the chosen cryptocurrency and order history. They normally also have buy and sell-boxes. Before you choose an exchange, try to have a look at the trading view so that you can ascertain that it feels right to you. The below is a picture of the trading view at CEX.io:

CEX.io Fees

CEX.io Trading fees

The one thing we can’t stress enough is that you must always ascertain the trading fees at any exchange you are interested in. Every trade occurs between two parties: the maker, whose order exists on the order book prior to the trade, and the taker, who places the order that matches (or “takes”) the maker’s order. Makers make the liquidity in a market and takers remove this liquidity by matching makers’ orders with their own.

CEX.io’s trading fees for takers are 0.25%. This fee is in line with industry average. The exchange also offers a discount to makers, who trade at a fee of 0.16%. This is especially beneficial for the investors not interested in picking up existing orders from the order book.

CEX.io also has a special deal on certain of its trading pairs. For instance, when adding USDT to the platform on 11 October 2020, they announced that the trading fees for all USDT pairs would be 0.10% taker fees and 0.00% maker fees, up to and including 31 December 2020. Great deal, indeed!

Finally, the trading fees are reduced as the trader increases trading volumes. They can go down to as low as 0.10% for takers and 0.00% makers (without any special campaign offers as for the USDT pair mentioned above). This is the full table of trading fee discounts:

CEX.io Withdrawal fees

CEX.io charges a withdrawal fee amounting to 0.0005 BTC when you withdraw BTC. This is around 40% lower than the industry average, as the industry average is 0.000812 BTC per BTC-withdrawal.

All in all, the fees charged by CEX.io are in line with, or even slightly below, the global industry averages.

Deposit Methods

At CEX.io, you can deposit through both wire transfer and credit cards. This can be helpful especially for newer crypto investors putting in their first funds in the crypto world. As a matter of fact, CEX.io was actually one of the first cryptocurrency exchanges in the world offering the choice to buy crypto via credit card. CEX.io also recently lowered its credit card deposit fees after negotiating with the card providers. As of 3 September 2020, the fees for purchasing crypto by credit card is 2.99% of the purchase amount. The previous fee was 3.50%.

There are a lot of people using the credit card deposit alternative. According to CEX.io, it is actually one of the most popular ways (with a record of USD 180 million in deposits one single month).

CEX.io Security

CEX.io’s security score is D, when performing the test at Observatory by Mozilla (https://observatory.mozilla.org/). This is below industry average when it comes to top crypto exchanges.

As mentioned above, this exchange supports credit card deposits. Either alone or through the use of any of its associated payment service providers. Other cryptocurrency exchanges that also have this option include:

Beginner’s Guide to CEX.IO: Complete Review

CEX.IO was launched in 2020 in London and initially operated both as a Bitcoin exchange and cloud mining service.

At one stage its mining pool, known as Ghash.io, was one of the largest on the Bitcoin network, holding 42% of total mining power of the Bitcoin network.

However, in January 2020 the website closed its mining services which means that it now operates solely as a cryptocurrency exchange, allowing users to purchase and sell Bitcoin and a variety of other cryptocurrencies with credit or debit cards instantly.

The CEX platform offers cross-platform trading via website, mobile app (which is available on Android and iOS), WebSocket and Rest API.

CEX is one of the most popular cryptocurrency exchanges currently operating. One of the primary reasons its popularity is that its website provides users with a very easy to use interface, making it ideal for beginners.

It also provides a multi-level account system that is customizable and suitable for both Bitcoin beginners and institutional traders.

How to Register on CEX

CEX is incorporated as a private limited company in the UK and is registered with the ICO in the UK and with FINCEN in the US.

It applies KYC (know your customer) and AML (anti-money laundering) policies, which requires users to verify their identity with CEX upon registration.

This verification involves providing CEX with an email address, telephone number, setting up a password and then verifying both the telephone number and the email address before going to upload supporting ID documents.

CEX provides for a two-factor authentication system, using either SMS, automated phone call or through the Google Authenticator app.

How to Purchase

CEX accepts VISA, MasterCard or virtual credit cards. Once registered and having verified their identity with CEX, users can buy Bitcoin or Ethereum using a credit or debit card, a wire transfer or, if they are in the EU, a SEPA transfer.

It is then simple for you to add your credit card or debit card to your account. Credit and debit card verification can take up to 48 hours but, once completed, you can purchase Bitcoin and Ethereum instantly through your CEX account.

Card verification requires users to take a selfie with their credit card, with the photo including a clear image of the user’s face and the relevant credit / debit card.

This photo should be in colour, of high resolution, and the file size should be no more than 15MB. Users should beware that if the quality of the selfie isn’t good enough for the CEX compliance officer, another selfie may be requested.

CEX does not disclose which external agencies they use to verify users’ identification.

However, they do state that user ID’s and credit card details are stored for at least five years after accounts are deleted. Once credit cards details are submitted, CEX submit a small verification charge to the credit or debit card.

In order to verify the card, users are required to enter the exact amount of this charge in USD. This charge is automatically refunded to users after verification is complete.

Users can also transfer funds by bank transfer. CEX currently accepts US dollars, Euros and Rubles. Fees for bank transfers in USD / EUR are a flat rate of $/€ 10.

CEX.IO clearly explains how its service works, with the below providing a summary of how to purchase cryptocurrency through the platform:

  • Once a trade is entered, CEX calculates the price of the trade and freezes that price for two minutes. Users then input how much (in fiat currency) Bitcoin or Ethereum they want to purchase at that price and are shown how much cryptocurrency they will receive.
  • Once users have pressed the Buy / Sell button, the CEX system will check the user’s account to ensure that they have sufficient funds to complete the transaction.
  • Once this process has been completed, CEX will complete the transaction, provided that the order can be fulfilled on conditions not worse than those agreed on.
  • Therefore, if the market has gone down, the trade will continue at the more favourable rate.
  • However, if the exchange rate has spiked in the intervening period since the trade is entered, the transaction will not be executed and the user will be notified.

How to Trade

Alongside easy purchasing of crypto, CEX also offers a more advanced trading screen for people who prefer to buy or sell that way.

It’s not advanced as some other exchanges but it’s easy to use and lets’ you trade in and out of crypto using fiat currencies: USD, EUR, GBP.

CEX Fees

CEX charges 3.5% plus $0.25 / £0.20 fees for credit card deposits to user’s accounts. Credit card purchases should be processed instantly once the card is verified. Some users have complained that these additional fees amount to ‘hidden charges’.

However, CEX states that the reason for this premium is to ensure that they will always be able to fulfil their orders, as they operate on a different premise to most exchanges in that they will fulfil orders at the offered rate with no exceptions (otherwise referred to as Fill-or-Kill orders).

The advantage of this format is that users are guaranteed that they will receive whatever has been agreed immediately and in full. However, other exchanges such as Bitstamp for example, require users to wait until a seller is willing to sell Bitcoin to the purchaser at the requested price. The upside is of CEX is therefore the guarantees and instant nature of the transaction, but these guarantees are subject to a premium price.

In addition, CEX charges a 7% service charge, which is included in the price of the cryptocurrency being offered on the exchange. However, this service charge is only applicable when users are purchasing directly from CEX. If a user is availing of the trading services, different fees are applicable.

Trading Fees

The basic fees for trades made on the CEX platform start at just 0.25%. However, higher fees are applicable if using credit or debit cards or making withdrawals to bank accounts.

They use the Taker / Maker model for trades on the platform, with the fees decreasing on volume as follows:

Trade Volume 30d, BTC Taker Maker
≤ 5 0.25% 0.16%
≤ 30 0.23% 0.15%
≤ 50 0.21% 0.13%
≤ 100 0.20% 0.12%
≤ 200 0.18% 0.10%
≤ 1000 0.15% 0.08%
≤ 3000 0.13% 0.04%
≤ 6000 0.11% 0.00%
> 6000 0.10% 0.00%

Commentators have estimated the CEX’s exchange rates are within the mid-market rate, and is reasonable compared with other cryptocurrency exchanges (aside from the service charges).

Deposit / Withdrawal Fees

Fees for deposits and withdrawals are dependent on your chosen method and break down as follows:
